Irish colleagues from Derry at CREPS
Through Erasmus exchanges, lasting friendships are forged. Having first come to the Ardèche in 2025 as part of a staff and teacher exchange programme, two instructors from the Gartan Outdoor Training Centre in Donegal have returned to the Ardèche, this time with the Driftwood Canoe Club. They are Charlie Cassidy and John Porter, known as ‘Ports’, who between them have decades of experience teaching outdoor sports, both to students on training courses and to young people trying out new outddor activities as a way of reconnecting with nature. Unconventional and endearing character, Ports, who has just retired, had last year hosted trainees and instructors from the CREPS of Vallon Pont d’Arc for a tour of the town of Derry, with which he has a very strong connection, his personal history being closely linked to that of Ireland. During this week at the CREPS, our two Irish friends, accompanied by eight other members of their club aged from 55 to 78, took part in a range of activities, including caving, canoeing in the Ardèche Gorges with the vice-president of the Nature Reserve, and Via Corda in the Chassezac Gorges with Mathis from the company Explo. It was an action-packed week that will leave them with vivid memories and, we hope, a desire to return to the Ardèche.
